Welcome to the Fam

The house has dressed itself for you:

velvet walls and gold trim

all the candle flames keeping watch,

each one turned toward the door.

Welcome to the fam, dear guest—

the vampires planned this evening

with your name tucked in their sleeves.

They’ve decorated in offerings of fun for you

with gifts ready to bestow

and taught the portraits how to follow you....

The count is pouring something crimson;

the countess guards the cake.

No one will mention the garlic

unless it dances through the gate.

So come inside, where shadows sparkle

and laughter rattles every pane.

This reception will be remembered

long after dawn has called your name.
