What is Poise?

I found a wonderful quote while keyword searching.  "Poise - The ability to be ill at ease inconspicuously."~~Earl Wilson.  I had to smile when I read that.  Why else would we be taught the importance of poise but to carry us through moments of nervous anticipation?  Which, by the way, isn't necessarily a bad thing, perhaps it's a precipice before euphoria.
